app challenge teams

Ms. Burghardt's enrichment students at the Middle School participated in the BT BOCES APP Challenge for the second year in a row.  20 teams from across Broome and Tioga Counties were tasked with coding an app that teaches people about an environmental issue.  The groups then have to create a commercial to promote their app and present a slide show to a group of judges.

After much deliberation- MEMS took 4 of the top 5 winning spots in both counties to continue on to the Congressional App Challenge this summer and fall.  Groups are awarded funds to meet and further develop their app to be presented to representatives in Washington D.C.

Congratulations to our winners.

Andrew Appleman and Priya Riegle

EnvioroScope:  An app coded with Python, this app will help community members become educated on the pollution of the Onodaga Lake, Susquehanna River and Elmira Toxins.  You can view clean up challenges from the app, earn leaderboard awards, and gain knowledge about local issues.  This group is celebrating their second year of success with the APP challenge.  Last year, Andrew and Priya (with additional members Alex Kudgus and Benjamin Appleman) submitted their APP to the Congressional APP Challenge in Washington D.C. and could not be prouder of their efforts.

Brooke Williams, Isabella Williamson, Elise Cruz, Elenore Snyder

Place That Waste:  This app helps users decide if their waste is garbage, recycling or compost.  This fun game gives the user a pile of "trash" to sort into appropriate bins.  If the user places an item in an incorrect bin, a helpful cheat sheet will pop up to help educate the user about the appropriate bin to use and why.

Adalyn Guillon, Garynne Rosato, Charlotte Yonkoski

Potion for the Ocean:  Potion for the Ocean is an app where you can learn about how ocean pollution affects the animals living in their habitats.  You can connect to a community board where you can see posts requesting help cleaning up at specific beach locations.  You can also post a request for help cleaning up beaches near you.  The search is based on your zip code!

Peter Lanterman, Ben Barcak, Tyler Dake, Cooper Duval

Tree F.F.:  Tree FF allows its user to learn about deforestation in a fun way!  Coded with APP Lab, the boys modeled a clicking game after Cookie Clicker to become a more learning-based app.  You can earn soil, oxygen and even plant your own trees to combat deforestation.

All four groups enjoyed a meal and award ceremony at BOCES.  We look forward to seeing what developments they make on their apps in the upcoming months.
