BOE rocognition

On Thursday evening, the Board of Education recognized those members of our school and community who have gone above and beyond in service.

Here is what Superintendent Van Fossen had to say about these exceptional people:

Lead Teachers: "The lead teacher group stationed at the HS is essential to the success of the building/district.  They are counted on to lead the staff and their departments in a multitude of ways on a daily basis.  This group of lead teachers is respected by the entire staff because of their continued dedication to the building and all the students of Maine-Endwell.  Without a doubt, it is because of the hard work of this group that we are able to deliver a premier education to each student.  As we embark on a new era of PLC “life” at M-E, their role will only continue to grow in importance and as they are called on to lead and further galvanize their departments.  The entire high school is proud to work with this group of SPARTAN LEADERS!"

David Beard, Angela Ciaravino, Erin Hansen, Shauna Stiles, Maria Fiori, Mary Lynne Musa, Mary Castaldo, Stephen Hughes, Kristen Anastos, and Jacquelin Kovacs.

Timothy Callahan: "The high school conducted a safety drill in coordination with outside law enforcement, in which they tested our safety measures and protocols.  It should be noted, Tim was not aware of the drill happening.

A law enforcement officer entered the building in plain clothes, in order to test adult responses to his presence in the building without a badge/T-Pass.  The officer passed Tim in the hallway, and after a brief moment Tim sensed that something was off.  Tim proceeded to run through the hallways until he was able to track the officer down, who was trying to evade him by hiding behind a door.  The vigilance and heroic nature of Tim’s actions were truly special on that day, and the high school is a safer place for having him there."

Several community members were also recognized for their bravery and thoughtfulness on November 26, 2022, when a Maine-Endwell parent/employee had a medical emergency in the stand prior to the football game. While there were others who provided support, their actions were noticed by those in attendance.

"For any medical professional, the ability and responsibility to drop whatever they are doing to help save another human being is a 24/7 reality. Medical professionals, Dr. Mark Wilson, Dr. Jim DeSantis, Dr. Kim DeSantis, Dr. John Perry, and Dr. Caitlyn Burford sprang into action to help save and support the parent and employee." Community member Amy Piester provided comfort and support to the family as care was provided to their loved one.

The six of you were identified as having played a major role in providing care and comfort to this family in the midst of a terribly traumatizing situation.

Your actions are both noble and respected and we are a safer and kinder community having such dedicated, thoughtful, and courageous individuals in our community.

On behalf of the district, thank you for your brave actions and willingness to serve our communities’ families and children."
