students with their artwork

On November 20, Homer Brink students participated in the Culture, Community, and the Classroom Showcase at the Roberson Museum and Science Center. 22 of Homer Brink art teacher, Diane Chianis' 4th grade artists (from Mrs. Thorner's class) worked with Maria Castanon Hall (founder and owner of Boricua Soul Catering and Sweets) to create clay cookies to resemble  the cookies Maria made for the students. They also completed renderings of little frogs (coquis) and flags.

It was a HUGE distinction for them!  The clay “cookies” and renderings of Puerto Rico will now go onto the Discovery Center for another exhibit!  The students work was displayed and they spoke about by experience in front of a large audience.

The 4th grade artists who spoke and participated were:

Pippa Martin

Caroline Semko

Austin Simek

Stella Strong

Fay Taft-Williams

All work was on display from Kelly Thorner's 4th grade class (in Mrs. Chianis' art class).

Diane Chianis received an honorarium from :

Local Learning: The National Network for Folk Arts in Education as one of eight teachers in NY selected to participate!  Congratulations!!
