Ask any educator and they’ll tell you – there is nothing more important than ensuring a student feels safe, supported and valued each day they come to school. From our newest Spartans in our UPK programs, to our high school seniors - strengthening the trust and connections throughout our buildings remains a major focus area in our 2025-2026 Strategic Plan. Collaboration and teamwork is a critical step in helping us get there, and one new program at Homer Brink is springboarding that mission.

In early November, the Spartan Way Committee, co-chaired by Jackie Hennessey and Maggie McCoy, helped launch Spartan Squads. Students and staff from EK to 5th grade joined together in small, cross-grade groups designed to build community, foster character, and create a true sense of belonging.

Each Spartan Squad includes about 12-15 students from different grade levels, led by at least two staff members. The groups plan to meet monthly for team-building activities, reflection, and connection, giving older students the chance to serve as mentors and role models, and younger students the confidence that comes from being part of something bigger.

“We are so excited about how our first Spartan Squads Day went! Seeing this idea come to life was amazing.  It was so fun to see students and staff showing their squad hand signals in the hallways the next day - bonds were already formed. The energy and vibe in the building were awesome! Can't wait for our next one,” said Hennessey.

“It was amazing to see our students and staff come together and connect in such a positive way! We love seeing that Spartan pride shine as we build a strong sense of community and belonging across our school. Our older students were incredible role models, stepping up as leaders and forming special bonds with our littlest Spartans. We can’t wait to see these connections grow even stronger,” said McCoy.

The energy in the building that day reflected more than just excitement, it reflected trust. By creating consistent opportunities for students to connect across grade levels, Homer Brink leaders are helping build the kind of relationships that make students feel seen, supported, and valued.

That sense of belonging ties directly into the district’s commitment to consistency, connection, and communication - all key elements in reaching our goals, one squad at a time
