For students in Mike Lurenz’s classroom, literature is more than words on a page - it’s something to be explored, questioned, and brought to life. That impact was recently recognized in a big way.
Lurenz, a veteran teacher of 20+ years, has been named a recipient of the “Educators Inspiring a Generation" Award, presented by Lea Webb. The honor recognizes educators for their commitment to student success, innovative teaching practices, and leadership within their school communities. Lurenz was one of just six teachers selected for the award and was nominated by the high school administration.
“I am honored to receive this recognition from Senator Webb. I thank all my colleagues and students for their roles in the nomination process,” said Lurenz.
For his students, the recognition comes as no surprise.
“Mr. Lurenz is one of the best teachers that I've ever had. His passion for literature is contagious and has made me so much more interested in reading. He breaks literature down in extraordinary ways that I didn't even know were possible. He's taught me so many new techniques that have completely changed the way I look at literature,” said senior Luca Konrad.
Students say it’s not just his teaching style that makes an impact - it’s the relationships he builds every day.
“As a person Mr. Lurenz is even better. He is one of the greatest men I know. I've had so many great conversations with Mr. Lurenz this school year that I will truly miss so much next year,” said Konrad.
“The impact that Mr. Lurenz has had on me and the rest of his students is tremendous. I'm so grateful to have had Mr. Lurenz as a teacher and I can promise you that no teacher deserves this award more than him,” said senior James Martin.
That same sentiment is shared across his classroom.
“Although I could give you an essay's worth of why Mr. Lurenz stands out, here's the primary reason why I think he's so special - he has so much care and commitment for every single student. As one of his students, it has been an honor to see how he treats everyone in our class as true literary scholars. He curates an incredible learning environment in which connections with peers flourish through a collaborative education,” said Martin.
For Mike Lurenz, it’s not just about teaching - it’s about shaping thinkers, building connections, and leaving a lasting impact that extends far beyond the classroom. We’d like to extend our congratulations on this well-deserved award.
