First graders build turkey traps
Students in classroomHow do you build a super turkey trap? Maine Memorial first graders in Lauren Hastings’ class used their engineering skills to build their own after hearing the story, “How to Catch a Turkey,” by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton.

Using their choice of classroom STEM kits, the students set to work. Each kit contains a specific item(s), for example, Lincoln Logs, paper and tape, blocks, styrofoam balls and toothpicks, Legos, and pipe cleaners.

Not only did the students build a trap, they wrote about how they did it. In the writing, the students practiced describing first, then, and last.

Note: No turkeys were harmed in this activity! Happy Thanksgiving!
