Silence is golden in this ELA classroom

Student and teacher writing collaboration

Even though you could hear a pin drop in Jill Kissick-Castro’s seventh grade classroom, there as a very vocal and deep discussion taking place.

Students participated in a “silent discussion” of the Harlem Renaissance poem, “If We Must Die,” by Claude McKay. The students analyzed the poem, and shared their ideas, without speaking a word, but by sharing their thoughts through a collaborative writing and critical thinking exercise.
