It’s a parade! Homer Brink second graders in Silvia Martinichio’s class talked about Thanksgiving Day traditions and then marched in their own Thanksgiving Day Parade right in their own classroom.
First the students read the book, “Balloons over Broadway,” by Melissa Sweet, the true story of how the parade began, and the man who started it all. They watched a video of the parade and floats from the 1920s and compared the floats from then and now, and they used their writing skills to describe their favorite part of the book.
Then they designed their own floats, held up on sticks like the original floats were. The class marched in the parade, complete with music and lots of original floats.
The students were excited to continue the tradition of watching the parade with their family members on Thanksgiving morning.
