A message from Principal Tom Burkhardt:
Hello Spartan Community,
In the past year, state education requirements for school attendance have changed under the new ESSA Act. Previously, the minimum attendance requirements to receive state aide required students to attend for 180 days. The new regulation requires students to have a minimum of 990 direct instruction hours. In preparation for this change last year, we had asked state officials for clarification on what activities related to our schedule satisfy the “direct instruction” rule.
In recent days, we have received answers to those questions and have determined that we should make some minor changes for this year in order to ensure that we will meet and surpass the state requirement.
We did not want to make major changes that would affect other buildings so we worked in conjunction with the middle school to find the best way to add instructional time, that would not extend the school day or immediately add days to the school calendar. Therefore beginning Monday February 25th, we will be extending our instructional periods by 1 minute and reducing our passing time from 4 minutes to 3. We have already communicated this to students and staff and will have new signage in place for Monday. We plan to use this change as an opportunity to gather some observational data as we look to make a more permanent and favorable schedule for next year.
If you have any questions or concerns about this change, or would like to offer suggestions for our new schedule, we invite you to please call the main office at 748-8070, or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our families for their continued support.
Thomas Burkhardt, Principal
