Ahoy mates! Students launch cardboard boats
Ahoy mates! Middle School students in Mr. Underwood’s science classes became shipwrights, captains and crew of their own boats for this project. The students constructed cardboard boats, and launched them for their maiden voyage in the HS pool.
The project included a variety of concepts including density, flotation, displacement, mass, volume, Newton’s 3 laws, forces, physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Teamwork and communication were key to the success of the project.
First the students researched and brainstormed boat designs. Then they sketched their design, created a scale model, and gathered supplies for their build. Whether they sailed or sank, the sailors had a fun time putting their engineering skills to the test.
