UPK UPDATE: Information for families

Dear UPK Families,
The Maine-Endwell Central School District has completed the spring UPK lottery drawing, notified families, prepared classrooms, performed the summer screenings, and put safety plans in place for the Covid Safety of all UPK students for the fall 2020. We are ready for our students but… the state has told us we are on HOLD for the 2020 UPK program until they see if the funding will be available.

Please be advised that the Maine-Endwell School District is waiting for NYSED to confirm funding for our program this year.  “NYSED is waiting to receive Division of Budget approval on the 2020-21 school year allocations for Universal Prekindergarten (UPK), Statewide Universal Full-Day Prekindergarten (SUFDPK) and Targeted Prekindergarten (TPK) before NYSED is able to inform districts, BOCES, and eligible agencies of their allocation amounts.” This means that our UPK programs, classrooms, and teachers are ready but the funding may not come through due to the COVID crisis leaving the state short funded as they wait for the Federal Funds to be allocated.  If this funding does not come through the UPK program will not be held this year.
We know that this leaves your family in a waiting place. The district will be sending a letter out to all UPK families by August 21st to help you best plan for the 2020-2021 UPK school year. At that time we will also post the UPK safety protocols for each site on our website along with the letter regarding funding. Our hope is to have our students with us in a fully funded UPK program this school year. Many of you may want to line up your back up child care plans in lieu of this program if funding does not come through.

Thank you for your patience and support as we push forward as a community in this challenging year.
Very Sincerely,
Molly Goosman
UPK Director & Assistant Principal
