A new Spartan athletic team is making its debut this spring, and it embodies the true meaning of Spartan Spirit. It’s Maine-Endwell Unified Sports!
At the High School, students with and without intellectual disabilities have come together to form a unified basketball team. Team members practice together and compete against other unified teams. It’s a unique chance for students of any ability to shine in their sport through social inclusion and collaboration.
Bill Ocker is the head coach. Several general education High School students serve as coaches and team partners. In addition to teaching basketball skills, the program embraces sportsmanship and community.
An important part of the program is the Youth Activation Committee, which advocates for respect, inclusion and acceptance for all. Made up of students with and without disabilities, the committee takes on the leadership role in promoting unified activities, and for creating excitement surrounding the sport competitions.
The district has partnered with Special Olympics, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) and the Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) to bring this opportunity to Spartan Country.
You are invited to come out and cheer on our Spartans. You can find the game schedule on the website HERE
