MM special education teacher receives Golden Apple award

Michele Knaul

During her 25-year career as a special eduction teacher, Maine Memorial’s Michele Knaul has encouraged and educated hundreds of students, and collaborated with dozens of teachers throughout the district in reading, writing, and math. Colleagues describe her as dedicated, inspirational, energetic, and thoughtful. For that reason and more, Mrs. Knaul is the 2018 Maine-Endwell Teachers’ Association Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award recipient.

The award is given annually to a person who exemplifies excellence in teaching at Maine-Endwell, significantly influences the lives of students, and contributes to the success of his or her school community.

A colleague remarked that Mrs. Knaul is the best student advocate she has ever worked with. She balances the expectations for high achievement and outstanding behavior and effort within the classroom with a fun learning environment. She accepts the uniqueness of each child and cultivates learning, and ignites imagination  in her students.

In addition to her care for her students, Mrs. Knaul also cares about her school community. She has participated in over 25 committees during her time at Maine-Endwell. She currently serves on the Maine Memorial Spartan Way committee, the school’s intervention committee, building planning team, strategic planning team, UPK and K task force, and she is the school’s student council advisor and the Morning Program coordinator.

Outside of school, Mrs. Knaul has been a Girl Scout leader, a team mom for Hiawatha Soccer, and she is currently an auxiliary member of the Apalachin Fire Department.

In all facets of her life, Mrs. Knaul works to change the lives of others for the better.
