HS teachers are named NYS Master Teachers
Congratulations to High School teachers Mary Castaldo and David Beard on being named New York State Master Teachers. Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement in October. Castaldo and Beard are among 214 educators selected to the program this year.

The Master Teacher Program is a network of the top secondary STEM educators in the state. They perform at the highest level in their profession in science, technology, engineering and math. To be eligible for the program, a teacher must be certified with at least four-years of teaching experience, must teach STEM content, and be rated “effective” or “highly effective” on the Annual Professional Performance Review.

In order to be named a Master Teacher, Castaldo, a math teacher, and Beard, a technology teacher, completed an application, took a content specific test, and submitted a resume and letters of recommendation. Once selected to move on in the process, the candidates were invited to Binghamton University. There they made a presentation to their peers on a topic of interest to them. Castaldo presented on GPS tracking analytics, and Beard’s presentation was on a cardboard boat project. A reflective essay, and interview with educators in higher education and retired STEM teachers, followed.

For their four-year participation in the program, Master Teachers receive an annual stipend, serve as peer mentors, participate in professional development opportunities, and nurture and promote the next generation of STEM teachers.

Both teachers say they are looking forward to participating in the Master Teacher program. For both, the opportunity to collaborate, not only with their peers, but to also foster relationships with outside groups, is very exciting.

For Castaldo, the chance to collaborate with other Master Teachers will inspire her teaching, and the program will help her to connect with community partners on lessons she will bring back to her students.

Beard said that collaboration with other teachers in the STEM fields will provide him with ways and opportunities for integrating science, engineering and math into his technology lessons. His students will be able to see real-life applications for what they are learning.

In addition to Castaldo and Beard, High School math teachers Karin Mann and Carl Beebe, along with science teacher Kyle Tibbits , are also current Master Teachers.

Congratulations to all of our Master Teachers on their accomplishment!
