Second Annual Pete Matzke Memorial
5K Road Race
August 7, 1999

Cornell university runner Geoff King bested a field of 194 runners over a hilly and fog shrouded course to win the Matzke Memorial 5K in 15:56. The first four finishers, King, Anthony Gallo, Mike McPherson, and New Jersey prep star Mark Bahnuk, ran as a pack through the first mile and a half until King surge opened a 10-second gap. Gallo closed to within 20 feet with 600 meters to go, but King used his 14:47, 5000-meter speed to pull away as the course finished on the Maine-Endwell High School track. King broke his course record by 18 seconds.

In the woman's race, World Cross-Country Team member Cheryl Smith ran alone and crossed the finish line in 18:20, a minute better than triathlete and marathoner Christa Winslow. Smith also broke her course record by 18 seconds.

The race is held to honor the memory of Pete Matzke, the captain of the 1995-1996 Section 4 Championship Maine-Endwell High School Cross-Country teams, who died in an accidental fall at Cornell University in 1997. Nine of Pete Matzke's former cross-country teammates ran in the race, as did two previous winners of the Matzke Memorial College Scholarship. Runners came from as far away as Florida, North Carolina, Nevada, and Ohio to participate. Tim Bahnuk, who ran cross-country for M-E in the 1960s, traveled from New Jersey to run with his son, Mark. Mark Bahnuk finished fourth. Tim Bahnuk finished 105th in 26:50.

The race raised $1,600 for the Pete Matzke Memorial Scholarship Fund at Maine-Endwell High School.
